Musculoskeletal pain
Tim is a Soft Tissue Therapist who specialises in an advanced bodywork called Myofascial Release (MFR). He travels to the USA to train with the world's leading pioneer of this work, the American Physical Therapist John F Barnes. Tim brings a holistic mind-body perspective to support every client, drawing on both his musculoskeletal / functional movement knowledge and also the deep whole person connection and intuitive palpation skills developed through the MFR.
Beyond his work as a therapist Tim loves reading, long dog walks in nature and he's a lifelong cycling geek. He also likes beer and dabbles in home brewing. He is a student of Tai Chi, Zhan Zhuang and Okinawan Martial Arts and lives on a canal boat in Tewkesbury.
So what is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial Release (MFR) holds gentle, sustained pressure into the continuous 3D matrix of collagenous tissue - fascia which surrounds and infuses all the other structures in the body. After a short time (typically 3-5 mins), as both therapist and patient quieten their minds, the fascia begins to soften and "melt", releasing areas of restriction which can exert crushing pressure on nerves, arteries, muscles, glands, pain receptors etc. Fascia restrictions arise from physical injury, emotional and psychological trauma and can trigger many common diseases and pain syndromes.
MFR is great for improving posture and mobility but fascia is also the physical environment where we suppress trauma and painful memories. For some clients the MFR journey enables them to finally let go of sub-conscious bracing patterns and the treatment brings strong emotional releases and a lifting of burdens. Myofascial Release is also incredibly relaxing!
Over 50 years ago John F Barnes PT developed his Indirect Myofascial Release approach to ease his own back injury. Now in his 80's, his approach is regarded as the "Gold Standard" in MFR and has been labelled the "Missing Link" in western healthcare. The celebrated Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota recently sent 15 staff for MFR training with John's team. Tim has trained with John's UK Study Group Leader since 2018 and has logged 160 hours of training with John in the USA, including a week placement in John's Myofascial Treatment Centre in Malvern, Pennsylvania, where he worked alongside some of the leading MFR therapists in the world.
